200 beautiful miles in 4 days - May 9th - May 13th 2018

                    Boudicca Cycling Event

The Boudicca Challenge is a 4 day/200 mile cycle experience visiting many of the best parts of Norfolk and Suffolk.  It circles the majority of the territory inhabited by the Iceni Tribe in AD 43 by using the quiet lanes and byways of the National Cycle Network to explore the wonderful Norfolk Coast and the beautiful countryside of Suffolk. The Boudicca Challenge is definitely not a race ! – It’s probably best described as a moderately challenging ride for average ability cyclists - you should be happy to be on bike for up to 5 hours a day.  Although you will all meet up at the same hotel each evening we don’t expect all the group to cycle together - everyone has their own cruising speed and places they may want to visit. During the entire trip you will have friendly back-up support from UK Cycle Holidays, Phil and Martin will always be nearby with our Land Rover breakdown vehicle. (This carries spare bikes, parts and equipment and can even collect cyclists if absolutely necessary !!)

Arrival Night  - May 9th.

The starting point for the BC is the pleasant market town of Diss on the Norfolk/Suffolk border. Diss has a wealth of historic buildings and the famous Bressingham Garden and Steam Museum is only 2 miles to the West. Your accommodation will be in a 3 Star local hotel, or equivalent, and our package includes a full english breakfast every morning. (Lunchtime snacks and evening meals are not included but you can add 3 evening meals for £50pp).  As part of the tour we will host welcome drinks on the Saturday evening, giving everyone a chance to meet over a glass of wine and discuss the adventure for the next 4 days.

May 10th

Today’s the day !!  Stating at 9.00a.m. you head off West on Regional Cycle Route 30. Cycling on very quiet lanes and byways through gently undulating farmland and woodlands your first stop for Coffee will be the historic town Thetford, regarded by many as the home of Boudicca’s royal palace. More recently Thetford was the base for many of the episodes of Dad’s Army and we will visit Captain Mainwaring’s statue by the riverside. The afternoon starts with lunch on the edge of Thetford Forest  and then we go out through the Forest towards Watton shadowing the ancient Roman Road known today as the Pedders Way.

In the late afternoon we reach the sanctuary of the old Saxon settlement of Dereham.  It’s now an interesting Market Town in the very centre of Norfolk offering a wide variety of attractions:- Vintage Railway, Cinema, Modern Swimming Pool and Victorian Museum. You will be staying in one the town’s historic Coaching Inn’s – both offer very comfortable accommodation and great food.

Total mileage on Day 1 approx: 51 miles

May 11th

A beautiful ride this morning alongside ancient meadowland and through historic villages towards Fakenham and the Norfolk Coast. Passing Gressenhall Rural Life Museum and near the Saxon Cathedral at North Elmham you’ll probably stop for coffee in Fakenham before following Cycle Route 1 into the small pilgrimage town of Walsingham. With lots of quirky cafes and historic sites this is a great stopping place for lunch. It’s then on to Coast; options to cycle through the 1500 acres of parkland at Holkham Hall and on to the vast and totally unspoilt beach at Holkham Bay or alternatively park your bike and explore the small fishing town of Wells-next-the-Sea which still has a fleet of working shrimp boats. Complete the day in an excellent country hotel near the Coast.

Total mileage Day 2 approx: 47 miles

May 12th

A day when you’re spoilt for choice – our route takes you near many of Norfolk’s best attractions:- the North Norfolk Railway, Sheringham Park,  Shire Horse Sanctuary, Cromer Pier, Felbrigg Hall and many others !

Perhaps a lunch of famous Cromer Crabs or traditional Fish and Chips at the seaside village of Mundesley before tackling the quiet coastal section of Regional Cycle Route 30 and the run down to Great Yarmouth and the Norfolk Broads.  Cycling past remote windmills and nature reserves we arrive in the bustling resort of Great Yarmouth in the late afternoon.  A short hop from Great Yarmouth takes us to our overnight stay in a 3 star hotel on the edge of Lowestoft.

Total mileage Day 3 approx: 56 miles

May 13th

Now turning West, still on Regional Cycle Route 30, we are on the final leg back to the starting point in Diss. The route follows the wonderful River Waveney Valley and passes through the Norfolk Broads at Beccles and the quirky market towns of Bungay and Harleston. Before reaching Diss you can stop for a canoe or boat trip on the Broads, visit the Flixton Aviation Museum or explore the World War II Bomb Group Museum at Thorpe Abbotts.

Arrive back at Diss mid-afternoon for a celebratory glass of champagne and a well deserved rest. As well as our warm congratulations everyone will receive a presentation photograph and a souvenir T-shirt.

Total mileage Day 4 approx: 38 miles

Cycling is a great way to explore Norfolk & Suffolk, and when you add a beautiful rolling landscape and a network of quiet country lanes you the have the perfect place to get those pedals turning!

For the last 21 years our families have been cycling the byways, tracks and lanes of Norfolk & Suffolk, in the process we’ve discovered numerous ruined castles, deserted beaches, wonderful village inns, amazing children’s attractions and a wide collection of fascinating places to explore. And because we don’t have any serious hills in this lovely part of England everyone can cycle our routes – even if you’ve not been on a bike for years!

Using our own experiences we’ve developed a unique range of cycling tours that explore the very best bits of Norfolk and Suffolk. All our routes follow quiet country lanes to search out and discover a wealth of interesting places each day – you can also choose between different route options and while you travel ‘light’ on one of our modern touring bikes all your luggage is transported to your evening destination – usually a comfortable country hotel or a high quality bed and breakfast.

So whether you want a 2 day Family Adventure or a 6 day Coastal Exploration we’re sure we have something to suit – and don’t forget we’ve cycled all these routes ourselves so just give us a call if you want to discuss options or talk about any aspect of our tours.

Hoping to see you soon,

Martin, Phil, Mick and the UK Cycle Holiday Team

Thoroughly enjoyed the holiday, it was a really great experience with the cycling routes pitched exactly at the right level

Ian, Cheshire

Getting the Train to Diss worked well, only 90 mins from Liverpool Street then a pleasant country ride to a lovely little hotel. Overall a very relaxing and enjoyable weekend without the Car for once !

Richard, North London

The perfect balance between cycling and family attractions, we didn't have to cycle more than 1 hour before the Zoo, Steam Train or Dinosaur Park came into view... well thought out and great fun for kids

Wendy, Fersfield

The route plan was spot-on, we got to Southwold on lovely quiet country lanes and had all afternoon to explore the town... a downhill ride and a ferry crossing by rowing boat was a great way to arive at our hotel!

Mark, Cumbria

first time on a cycle for years...we really enjoyed the holiday and would definately recommend it to others, we will be back next year

Sue, Sussex

I tested your Coastal Explorer Tour with a couple of friends and can honestly say it’s a brilliant way to discover North Norfolk. Your suggested route took us through some perfect cycling countryside offering loads of interesting places to visit

John, London

At the end of fantastic days cycling we stayed at a lovely country hotel, the food was superb and the room very comfortable…it's obvious you've developed the perfect recipe for fun and relaxing cycling holidays

Pete, Milton Keynes

Your route was perfect for the kids, not too far to reach the attractions but enough countryside to make it feel like a little adventure…they both enjoyed all the fresh air and want to come back in the Spring

Netti, London

Thanks for arranging a great cycle tour, all of our group had a brilliant time even though 3 of us had never been on a bike for over 5 years….the scenery was spectacular, the bikes comfortable and the pubs brilliant!

Liz, Cockermouth

Last year we did the Coast to Coast ride but this time we wanted to do something a bit more relaxing. So a trip around East Anglian Castles was just perfect...very well done for putting together our route at such short notice

Nick, Winchester

Last year we got stuck at the airport for hours so as a family we decided to reduce the hassle and holiday nearer home.... the kids also wanted a 'green' holiday so your Safari Tour was exactly what we needed.

Amanda, Horsham

After doing very little exercise for 10 years I wasn't sure if I would enjoy cycling again however your bikes are so easy to ride and comfortable I really enjoyed myself..... on the third day I did 30 miles and even thought about doing more!

Ashley, Southwold - Suffolk Secrets Tour

Undoubtedly Norfolk is at it's best when explored by bike, it just gives you time to stop at all the places you miss when in the car. Our only regret was that we hadn't arranged a longer tour…can we come back next month !

Geoff, Great Dunmow

I've cycled many parts of the UK but it was the first cycling holiday for my wife. Although she was a little nervous at first your advice and support allowed us to have a really excellent long weekend in a beautiful part of Suffolk…. Many Thanks

Paul, Leicestershire

Last year we did the Coast to Coast ride but this time we wanted to do something a bit more relaxing. So a trip around East Anglian Castles was just perfect...very well done for putting together our route at such short notice

Nick, Winchester - Bespoke tour for some special friends

Just a note to say thanks to Phil and Martin for arranging our cycle trip at such short notice. Everything was taken care of and despite two days of wet weather we had a wonderful week – the hotels were excellent:- good food, comfortable and friendly

Rodney, York

Many thanks for arranging our weekend cycling tour, both the Hotel and B & B were top class and your route notes took us to places well off the beaten track. Climbing up a working windmill and the seal trip are both to be recommended

Lisa, Chester - Coastal Explorer tour
